A Brief for Comfort and Simplicity
Designed as a weekend retreat for a family of four, the home was envisioned as a relaxed escape from everyday routines. The interior was initially empty, giving the designers the freedom to shape the entire environment according to a clear brief: create a space that feels comfortable, laid-back and quietly luxurious. Rather than emphasising grandeur, the approach focused on building an atmosphere suited to slower weekends and informal family time.
The Entrance as a First Impression
The entrance was treated as an important visual introduction to the home. Because the space was initially quite dark, mirrors were added to reflect natural light and brighten the area. A marble-topped console table provides a functional surface while also introducing a subtle sense of formality. Beneath a set of arched mirrors, a bench offers a practical place to sit when entering or leaving the house.
Interpreting the Hamptons Style Locally
The design draws from the well-known Hamptons aesthetic but adapts it through a South African lens. Light blues and soft whites form the central palette, creating a calm visual base throughout the house. Patterns appear in scatter cushions, wallpapers and fabrics, introducing variety without overwhelming the interiors. Natural tones and textures were also used to echo familiar South African materials and to reinforce a sense of warmth and approachability.
Bedrooms for Rest and Flexibility
The main bedroom was designed to feel restful while maintaining a subtle sense of character.
