Follow easy steps for a stylish, eco-friendly planter. Made from tin cans and other accessible materials, the whole family can enjoy making them!
What You’ll Need:
Empty tin cans
Spray paint in your favourite colors
Decorative elements (sticks, Lachin, pruning disc ends)
Small indoor plants (like Maiden Fern, Hen and Chick, or Tickey Creeper)
Gravel
Potting soil
A Haworthia succulent
Instructions:
Step 1:
To add drainage holes to the tin, find a sturdy surface, and using nails, pierce holes to the bottom of the tin.


Step 2:
Next, head to a well-ventilated area a spay paint the tins. You can be bold and colourful, or you can opt for neutral blacks and whites. After spray painting, decorate your tin. You can use any decorations you like, including ribbons, ice-cream sticks or waterproof stickers.


Step 3:
Add a layer of gravel at the bottom of the tin for drainage. For indoor applications, opt for plants like Maiden Fern, Hen and Chick, or Tickey Creeper. Carefully transfer your plant into the tin, filling any air gaps with soil. Work it in, ensuring no roots are exposed, then place your upcycled creation in a well-lit spot.
