Garden Heroes
Season 1
This new series reveals the hard work and imagination ordinary people have put into their gardens across the island. We’ve sought out the best amateur gardeners to celebrate the joy of transforming your own space. Each week three contestants will open their gates to our experts. The experts will take the tour, examining every leaf and sniff every flower, to evaluate the gardens.
How the garden is laid out, how the planting has been done, and what features have been added, are all investigated. But we also want to know what the garden means to the owner. Maybe it’s a place of adventure for kids, perhaps it’s a special space for relaxation, or maybe it’s a fully functional extension of your home, for entertaining and dining. How the garden fits into and enhances your life is an important factor too. The gardens will be split into different categories in each episode, and the experts will assess the plants, the design, the functionality, and the feel of the garden before ultimately choosing a winner. Each episode will have an individual winner, and they will become one of Ireland’s Garden Heroes. This series is a celebration of nature, of planting and growing things, and the beauty we can all create for ourselves.

Episode 6
The Garden Heroes experts are visiting 3 gardens under the theme of ‘Grow Your Own Way’. These gardens belong to three completely different women who have diverse stories and completely different routes into their love of flowers and gardening. Their gardens are unique to them, their personalities and the stories of their families. History, culture and familial bonds all feed into what their gardens have become. Our experts will assess the success of these three gardens taking into account the aims and needs of the gardener, measuring the success of their own merits.
Episode 5
The Garden Heroes experts are visiting 3 gardens under the theme of ‘Attention Grabbers’. These gardens demand our full attention from the moment we see them. And these are gardens that have extra surprises for visitors. Our experts will assess the success of these three gardens on their own merits and according to what the gardeners have tried to achieve, while discovering what the garden mean to the gardeners and their families
Episode 4
The Garden Heroes experts are visiting 3 gardens under the theme of ‘Gardens That Intrigue’. These gardens ask us to re-examine what we mean by the term garden, they ask us to reassess what a garden is supposed to do for us beyond plants and furniture. The gardeners this week have created three unique spaces and their goals and motivations are all different. But each garden is intriguing and exciting for any visitor. Our experts will assess the success of these three gardens and discover what motives the gardeners are driven by.
Episode 3
The Garden Heroes experts are visiting 3 gardens to assess ‘Labours of Love’. The success of a garden is often down to one person with a singular vision, and a will to see it through to completion. And many times, as with any garden, there is no finish line. The work and creativity required is constant. Our experts will assess the success of these three gardens and hear the commitment and dedication of the gardeners in their pursuit of their unique vision, digging into the relationship between the gardener and the garden.

The Garden Heroes experts are visiting 3 gardens to assess ‘Gardens That Surprise’. The success of a garden is often about what makes it memorable. Our experts will asses whether these three gardens have plants and features that will surprise and enchant visitors, making these gardens more memorable than others.

The Garden Heroes experts are visiting 3 gardens to assess the ‘Creative Use of Space’. Whether you have a large garden, or a tiny area to call your own, the success of the garden is about how you use what you’ve got, and what it says about you.
