From Stairs to Space
As you descend the staircase, the open-plan living area unfolds, revealing a bright, airy environment in stark contrast to the darker, material-focused finishes upstairs. Designed by Karen Steyn, this downstairs area combines the dining room, living room, kitchen, and playroom into a single, cohesive space that flows effortlessly toward the outdoors.
Blurring Boundaries
The design intentionally merges indoor and outdoor living. Stackable doors open wide to the garden and pool area, while sections that were once exterior spaces have been enclosed to expand the interior. A former garage now houses the kitchen and children’s playroom, maximizing functionality without sacrificing openness.
A Light, Mediterranean Palette
White floors and light finishes set a Mediterranean tone throughout the main living areas. The sofa was custom-designed to create a sense of floating relaxation, while the dining table and chairs were incorporated from the family’s existing collection. Natural light floods the front of the room, reinforcing the airy, holiday-like atmosphere.
Depth Through Colour
To avoid a purely monochrome space, deeper shades were introduced at the back. The kitchen and playroom feature a soft, sage-green joinery that adds contrast and depth. Minimalist details, such as hidden storage, a concealed drinks fridge, and sleek countertops, preserve the sense of openness while maintaining functionality.
Personality Throughout
Unlike more uniform designs, this home allows each area to develop its own identity. Kids’ bedrooms, circulation spaces, the office, and living areas each carry a unique personality, reflecting the family’s lifestyle and approach to living spaces. Karen’s design achieves a cohesive yet richly layered home that blends comfort, creativity, and light.
Details and Features
Low ceilings were addressed with simple ceiling downlights complemented by wall-mounted feature lights. Sculptural wall pieces add visual interest, while the children’s playroom includes a whimsical balloon light. Every element balances practicality with aesthetic appeal, creating spaces that are simultaneously functional and expressive.
