Gardening 101 is your complete garden guide, taking you through everything that needs to be done in the garden, from demonstrations and plant advice, to learning all about different herbs. Presented by garden guru Melanie Walker and herb specialist Warren Lange, this team will give you the confidence and inspiration to create a thriving garden and gorgeous outdoor space. Whether you’re a novice gardener or simply want inspiration, this series will show you how to get your hands dirty and start growing.

Episode 13

Water adds a calming, tranquil effect to any outdoor space, so today we’re looking at a few water plants. Then, it’s all about bulbs, how to plant them and what to look out for in the shops. Warren is wrapping up every thing he has taught us over the series with his overview of herbs. And finally, what is it about hedges that make people love them so much? Melanie is going to find out

Episode 12

Garden guru Melanie Walker is checking out the gorgeous array of autumn shrubs. Then she’s checking out container gardening, the different pots available and the funky colours they come in to give your garden a unique edge. Warren Lange is adding a local twist with his take on indigenous herbs. Finally it’s time to splash out in the tropics as we check out what to plant to get that lush vegetation in your outdoor space.

Episode 11

Who can resist a bright, cheerful shrub that flowers throughout the year? Our plant of the week is the indigenous Anisodontea or the “pink mallow”. This evergreen perennial shrub can grow up to a whopping 2-3 metres tall. Then, we’re talking garden design, how to trick the eye into making a garden seem bigger and wider. Our herb expert Warren Lange is finally putting his plan into action as he completes his herb garden. Finally, I’ll be exploring the world of succulents. These plants have adapted to survive arid conditions throughout the world. Fortunately this has resulted in an incredible variety of interesting leaf forms, plant shapes and colours. They’re water-wise, hardy and look great in any space.

Episode 10

This week, it’s all about aloes. These fabulous plants require little water and grow well in pots or in the ground, making them ideal additions to your drought-resistant or low maintenance gardens. Then, we’re looking at seeds and propagation, what’s on offer at the stores and how you can learn to do it yourself. Herb specialist Warren Lange is putting his design into motion as he starts building his herb garden. Finally we’re looking at swim ponds. This hot new trend is all about transforming a conventional swimming pool into a tranquil wetland.

We’re looking at annuals this week, the different varieties available and their growing conditions. Then Michael Gibbons is demonstrating how to install a water feature. Warren Lange is at the Mediterranean Her Festival. Finally, local really is lekker as Melanie shows us what to plant to achieve an amazing heritage garden.

Episode 8

The plant of the week is Crocosmia, or falling stars, known for their vibrant orange flowers that bloom in the summertime. Then we’re taking it back to basics by planting up a simple shrub. Warren gets medicinal with herbs and finally, if space is not on your side, Melanie is showing you how to maximise your garden, vertically.

Episode 7

The gorgeous and vibrant Mandevilla is our plant of the week. Then we’re checking out garden walls and retaining blocks. Warren Lange is talking container gardening and our trend this week is patio and verander plants and accessories.

Episode 6

Today we’re looking at the gorgeous and vibrant flowers, the Mandevilla. They’re great climbing plants and with the right care reward you with gorgeous flowers in an abundance of colours. Then we’re looking at garden walls, how to build them and how to make them look great. Warren is designing a herb garden and finally Melanie is looking at all the latest and greatest veranda and patio trends.

This week it’s all about the love so we’re checking out a classic favourite, the rose. Then Melanie is getting crazy with paving as she learns all the right techniques! Warren is designing a herb garden. Finally we’re checking out the latest trend to hit the gardening world, aquaponics!

Episode 4

Today we’re getting cool in the garden as we check out the shade-loving plant Plectranthus. Then Melanie shows you how to keep your plants looking fabulous by getting rid of pests and diseases using organic, home-made remedies and biological products. Warren Lange is looking at the large variety of herbs used in Indian and Asian cooking, and finally Melanie checks out a shade garden, how to bring shade into an outdoor space and which plants thrive without the sunshine.

Episode 3

Impatiens is our flower of the week. These beautiful little annuals come in a range of colours. Then Melanie is digging up all the dirt on compost, mulching and fertilisers. Herb specialist Warren Lange is going continental with his overview of French and Italian herbs. Finally, its time to get the kids off the couch and out into the sunshine! We’re making hanging baskets and terrariums – the kids love it and learn about all things green.

Episode 2

Today Melanie is checking out Salvias. They’re heat and drought tolerant and they come in many different shapes and colours. Then she’s dishing the dirt on soil, what questions to ask and what to buy at your local garden shop. Once we know how to prepare soil it’s onto the veggie garden we go! If tended to properly, veggie gardens are extremely rewarding and cost-effective, so get growing
