Overview

Think you can out-design the professionals?  Well, Inside the Box with Ty Pennington puts two self-proclaimed armchair designers to the test in an all-out decorating duel.  Tackling similar spaces in their homes, the two rivals and their teams go head-to-head to create a themed room in just two days.  But there’s a catch — they have to impress Ty by using all the crated items that come to them Inside the Box!  There are plenty of hidden clues, design lessons and mishaps along the way.  And in the end, Ty decides which team has pulled off the best makeover by crowning a winner.

Episode 1

Best friends Jamie and Samantha vow to outdo one another in their family room makeovers, but are challenged by the contents of the box which includes distressed barn board, a tea set, a pair of underwear, and yards and yards of white chain.  Obsessed with design and constantly redecorating her home, Sam and her brothers take a radical approach with a bold blue accent wall and by cutting her oversize furniture down to size – literally!  Across town, Jamie says she can out-design Sam any day of the week, and along with her sisters, gets creative by repurposing a washbasin and other materials while keeping her original layout intact.

Episode 2

Urban and artsy, Michael and Michelle usually collaborate on design projects, but this time they’re rivals facing off in a bedroom makeover duel.  Their first challenge is figuring out what to do with the industrial parts, lace doilies, beakers and tea bags they find inside the box.  A carpenter with bold ideas, Michael is at first perplexed, but with help from his good friend and sister, eventually comes up with a multi-purpose design plan.  Meanwhile, with help from her two gal pals, law student Michelle tackles her blank canvas of a room with an ambitious plan and plenty of cutting-edge ideas.

Episode 3

Neighbors Manoj and Kim are determined to overhaul their uninspired family rooms and win Ty’s makeover challenge.  But first they have to figure out what to do with the bold fabrics, gold spray paint and dryer vents they find inside the box.  With help from his wife and a buddy, risk-taker Manoj gets busy with a radical transformation that includes built-in bookshelves and Indian-inspired design elements.  Meanwhile, with help from her husband and sister-in-law, Kim injects personality into her lackluster living room once overrun with children’s toys.

Episode 4

With their shared preference for neutral interiors, neighbours Julia and Ana are determined to inject life into their drab family rooms, but are daunted by the contents of the box which includes patterned fabrics, bright orange paint, a few cans of glaze, and a neck brace. Together with her husband and daughter, Ana comes up with a solution for integrating her oversize TV and revamping her traditional fireplace, but submitting to a bolder colour scheme proves a major challenge.  Meanwhile, along with her husband and a friend, Julia transforms the kids’ playroom back into a family room with bold touches of plaid and a refaced fireplace, but struggles with the room’s tricky layout.

Episode 5

Long-time friends and neighbours, Catherine and Linda, are determined to outdo one another with their master bedroom makeovers, but are challenged by the mask, riding crop, giant spider and bold fabrics they find inside the box. To distinguish herself from the competition, and with help from her husband and children, Catherine creates a woven tapestry headboard and a geometric bench with faux fur throw. Meanwhile, decisive decorator Catherine challenges her husband and two boys with an ambitious project that includes refinishing the furniture and creating a woven headboard from scratch.

Episode 6

Co-workers and best friends Michelle and Diana tackle master bedroom makeovers, but are challenged by the piñata, ribbons, and Siamese fighting fish they find in the box.  Bravely mixing colours and textures, Diana comes up with a bold design plan to transform her neglected bedroom, and with help from her son and sister, sets out to demolish the competition.  Meanwhile, Michelle is at first challenged by the audacious wallpaper, but with support from her husband and sister-in-law, is determined to create a bedroom oasis worthy of a boutique hotel.

Episode 7

Sisters and best friends Shelley and Andi live next door to one another and although they both love country chic interiors, their bland bedrooms are in need of a major overhaul.  Both are determined to win Ty’s makeover challenge but are equally daunted by the buttons, trinkets, pennies and feather boas they find inside the box.  With help from her husband and cousin, perfectionist Shelley feels she has the upper hand and comes up with a few great ideas for repurposing.  Next door, with help from her husband and nephew, Andi dives right into the new design.  But has she completely missed Ty’s clue about hiding her big screen TV?

Episode 8

Cortney usually takes her design cues from her mom Carol, but as the competitive duo face off in a family room makeover duel, both are challenged by the luau green paint, vampire fangs, and striped, floral, and cheetah print fabrics they find inside the box.  Vowing she’s the better designer, and with help from her husband and friend, Cortney gets busy with wainscoting and a wild-patterned wingback chair. Meanwhile, Carol tackles an eye-catching cheetah rug and a major green paint overhaul, and although she says she prefers to take things slowly, her husband and son’s leisurely pace could jeopardize her efforts.

Can Carol and Cortney prove their designer mettle by creating bold, spring-inspired interiors?  And whose family room will ultimately earn Ty’s seal of approval?

Neighbours Carolyn and Christina love traditional interiors but their pre-teen sons want anything but in their bedrooms.  Both women are determined to embrace a more youthful style and win the makeover challenge, but both are equally daunted by the jawbreakers, skateboard decks, bold fabrics, and spray paint that they find inside the box. With help from her husband and a friend, Carolyn has lots of energy.  But can she come up with a coherent design strategy? Meanwhile, Christina and her team are overwhelmed and disappointed by the contents of the box, and have trouble getting started.

Dave’s girlfriend just moved out, and Eric’s new girlfriend just moved in, and now the two long-time friends are facing off in a condo makeover challenge to revamp their radically different living spaces.  Their first challenge is to figure out what to do with the pitchfork, driftwood, moss balls and lizard pleather they find inside the box.  With help from his sister and a friend, Dave sets out to reclaim his apartment and his identity, but with such strong influences at his side, expressing his own personality proves a challenge.  Meanwhile, Eric gets help from his girlfriend and brother to turn his modern mancave into a more feminine-friendly space.

Episode 13

With their different approaches to interior design, rival moms Lindsay and Sarah are facing off in a living room makeover challenge, but both are stumped by the origami, drop sheets, and huge flower stamps they find inside the box.  From the start, low-key Sarah categorically rejects half the items, but with help from her husband and handy-man friend, ultimately gets inspired and decides to use her imagination.  Meanwhile, with help from her husband and best friend, Lindsay gets serious about blending storage solutions with her Japanese-inspired design plan.
