Australia is home to thousands of decaying heritage homes – forgotten and neglected –  many with a celebrated past just waiting to be restored and brought back to life.

In this series, architect and history buff Professor Anthony Burke follows seven historic homes, all with incredible stories, as their owners embark on heroic journeys to save them from ruin.

But with tight budgets and time constraints, what begins as a passion project for these homeowners, often turns into a dreaded chore. But the stories are remarkable – from transforming an outdated and controversial Mid-Century relic into a 21st Century family home in Beaumaris, to an historic Signalman’s Quarters which once relayed messages about escaped convicts in Hobart, to a house in Pambula which served as a 19th Century post office filled with hidden treasures.

Restoration isn’t for the fainthearted and in this series we witness heart-warming highs and gut-wrenching lows. We meet homeowners facing terminal illness, racing to finish so they can enjoy the time they have left. And we meet those overcoming personal loss – whose drive and determination is fuelled by the memory of a loved one.

Throughout the series, no homeowners are left wondering ‘what if’, and all eventually discover that elusive glimmer of light at the end of their long and winding journeys. Each episode ends in a final reveal, showcasing a finished renovation and a home ready to live in. Inspiring and surprising, the results are truly spectacular.
