Building a contemporary shelf unit is a must for any DIY enthusiast who is looking to bring interest to a room. With a minimal design and solid timber Peter and Annalien show you how to build an impressive shelf unit. They’ll also show you how to create a wine rack to turn your shelf unit into a proper entertainers’ unit.

PCM 7 Compound Mitre saw 228 x 35mm Pine PAR
PST 18 JigSaw Sides 1730 – 3 pieces
PSR 18 Cordless drill cross slats 565 – 3 pieces
PEX 220 sander shelf slats 260mm – 3 pieces
PFS 5000 spray gun shelf bottom & top 530 mm – 6 pieces
Pof 1400 router Pine 20mm PAR
Palm router Wine rack front and back 500 x 120mm – 2 pieces
  30-40mm curtain rod – 150mm – 3 pieces
  4mm glass – 528mm x 220 mm – 2 pieces 
  screws 4 x 50mm 
  screws 4 x 40mm
  Varnish – Antique white
  pine wood filler
  Wood glue
  glass press in – type : plastic brackets clear

Follow these steps

Shelf

  • Draw and mark out where the shelves join
  • Draw and mark out where the cross slats join
  • Build outer frame
  • Insert shelf frames
  • Insert cross slats
  • Router edges
  • Sand and varnish
  • Measure and drill holes for glass brackets
  • When dry insert glass brackets and glass shelves

Wine rack

  • Draw out shape for bottles front
  • Match up centres and draw out and cut back rests for bottles
  • Router edges
  • Assemble front and back
  • Sand and varnish
