Concrete garden lanterns

What you will need:

  • PVC piping (110mm)
  • Safety goggles and gloves
  • Metal oil can with wick
  • Angle grinder
  • Bucket
  • Steel trowel
  • Sponge
  • Binding wire
  • X2 buckets of fine riversand
  • X1 bucket of stone (13mm)
  • X1 bucket of cement
  • Water

What to do:

    1. Use an Angle grinder to cut a slit from the top to the bottom of the PVC pipe. The pipe will form the lantern mould
    2. Place the pipe into the bucket half filled with sand (the sand serves to keep the pipe stable)
    3. Mix 1 bucket of fine riversand, 1 bucket of stone and 1/2 bucket of cement with water. Be careful not to add too much water as the concrete mixture needs to be of yoghurt consistency.
    4. Make sure that you are working on a level surface. Half fill the pipe mould with the concrete mixture. Then place the metal oil canister into the pipe – making sure that it is level with the top lip of the pipe.
    5. Fill up the spaces around the oil canister with the concrete mixture up to the top level of the pipe. Use a sponge to neaten up the mould and leave to dry.

* if you are using a thinner walled pipe, then you might need to fasten it up

  1. When the lantern has completely dried – remove it from the pipe. Fill the oil can with some lantern oil and light up you garden
