Amigurumi crochet is a fun craft that can be used to create key rings, bears, small animals and a whole lot more. This week on Show Me How, Gloria Bastos is joined by Wilma La Cock of La Crochet. She will show us how to crochet a lovely snail. She will teach us various techniques such as following patterns, increasing and decreasing stitches, calculating stitches, slip stitch, stuffing the snail, adding different colours and so much more!

AMIGURUMI 100% COTTON SNAILS

Materials

  • AMIGURUMI 100% COTTON S03: 1 bag for the 5 snails
  • 10 craft safety eyes 1/4” (6 mm) in diameter
  • Filling
  • Model 1: cols: salmon, lime
  • Model 2: cols: blue, beige
  • Model 3: cols: fuchsia, beige, grey
  • Model 4: cols: water green, burnt orange, grey
  • Model 5: cols: salmon, green, lime, burnt orange
  • Crochet hook: C2 (U.S.)/( 2.5 mm)
  • Stitches
    • Single crochet, slip st, double crochet, triple crochet, double
    • triple crochet, chain st, half double crochet, magic ring: (see
    • basic instructions in our magazines or www.katia.com)
    • Increase: make 2 sts from the same st
    • Decrease: 2 sts closed together
    • Pattern st: (see graph A)

 

Instructions

  • HEAD: the single crochet is worked in a spiral form. To keep a better check of the row count, place a marker in the first st of each row.
  • Using the colour following the list for each model, make a magic ring and fill it with 6 single crochet then join the 6 sts with a slip st.
  • Cont increasing in the following manner on the following rows:
    • 1st row: 1 increase in each st = 12 sts
    • 2nd row: * 1 st, 1 increase * rep from * to * = 18 sts
    • 3rd row: * 2 sts, 1 increase * rep from * to * = 24 sts
    • 4th row: * 3 sts, 1 increase * rep from * to * = 30 sts
    • 5th row: * 4 sts, 1 increase * rep from * to * = 36 sts
    • From the 6th row to the 11th row: work without increasing = 36 sts
  • Cont decreasing in the following manner:
    • 12th row: * 10 sts, 1 decrease * rep from * to * = 33 sts
  • Place the eyes between rows 8 and 9, leaving 8 sts between them.
    • 13th row: * 9 sts, 1 decrease * rep from * to * = 30 sts
    • 14th row: * 8 sts, 1 decrease * rep from * to * = 27 sts
    • 15th row: * 7 sts, 1 decrease * rep from * to * = 24 sts
    • 16th row: * 6 sts, 1 decrease * rep from * to * = 21 sts
  • Fill the head.
  • Cont decreasing.
    • 17th row: * 5 sts, 1 decrease * rep from * to * = 18 sts
    • From the 18th row to the 22nd row: work without decreasing = 18 sts
    • 23rd row: * 5 sts, 1 decrease * rep from * to * = 15 sts
    • 24th row: work without increasing = 15 sts
    • 25th row: * 3 sts, 1 decrease * rep from * to * = 12 sts
    • 26th row: work without increasing = 12 sts
    • 27th row: * 2 sts, 1 decrease * rep from * to * = 9 sts
    • 28th row: work without decreasing = 9 sts
    • 29th row: * 1 st, 1 decrease * rep from * to * = 6 sts
  • Cut yarn and fasten off.
  • ANTENNAE: the single crochet is worked in a spiral form.
  • Using the colour following the list for each model, make a magic ring and fill it with 5 single crochet then join the 5 sts with a slip st.
  • Cont working in the following manner:
    • 1st row: 1 increase in each st = 10 sts
    • 2nd row: work without increasing = 10 sts
    • 3rd row: 1 decrease in each st = 5 sts
    • From the 4th row to the 8th row: work without decreasing = 5 sts
  • Cut yarn and fasten off.
  • Make another antenna the same.
  • SHELL: the single crochet is worked in a spiral form. To keep a better check of the row count, place a marker in the first st of each row.

  • Cut yarn and fasten off.
  • Make another piece the same.

  • LEAVES
  • Using green make a magic ring and work in pattern st following graph A.
  • Cut yarn and fasten off.
  • Make 3 more leaves the same and 1 more leaf only up to the 3rd row of graph A.
  • FINISHING (MAKING UP)
  • Sew the antennae onto the head, at a distance of 3 rows on top of the eyes.
  • To make the mouth thread a wool sewing needle with burnt orange yarn and give it the desired form (see photograph).
  • Sew the 2 parts of the shell, leaving an opening for filling, fill and finish sewing.
  • Sew the head onto the shell.
